William Mortimer Foster

Although a Squadron leader there are conflicting reports of his service in 66 Squadron. Was he the commanding officer in 1944. I have it as being SL HAS Johnston (who had served under Tuck in 257 Squadron, then been a flight commander in 133 Squadron, he was also a Malta Veteran who wrote "Tattered Battlements"). His (Johnston) command lasted until November 1944 according to my notes. However 2nd taf (Vol.2) states Foster led the squadron in July 1944, (although TOE does not state he was in command of 66 Squadron.). Was Foster a supernumerary leading in Johnston's absence?

regards

Keith

Re: William Mortimer Foster

Note that later in 2nd TAF Johnston was still leading the squadron in September 1944 when it converted to Spitfire IXe...
