Re: General Gunther Rall has passed away at the age of 91 years old.

I had the honour to have a steady contact with Mr Rall since 2002. I was hosting his first visit to Finland in 2003 and co-hosting his second visit in 2006.
In last May I visited his beautiful home at Bad Reichenhall with my wife. He gave us a 2 hour drive in the Alps in his VW Polo. I´ll never forget that trip.

We were supposed to meet again four weeks ago in September, when I visited Munich. He had to cancel a few days before. When he called me to announce and apologize that he couldn´t make it, he told me that we will meet the next time when I travel to South Germany. Unfortunately, that next time never came.

He was a great officer, pilot and person.
When he was asked during one of his lectures here in Finland about the best moment in his life, the answer was quick as a lightning: "When I married my wife!".

I am sure that they will meet again.

Rest in peace.

Re: General Gunther Rall has passed away at the age of 91 years old.

Quite an extraordinary man...there's no doubt about it.
I never had the priviledge to meeting him but like a lot of guys here, I was immediately impressed by his presence when I did see him on tv and film....

But you can't knock 91 years...an incredible life lived to the full.....try not to mourn him...remember him and his generation..as we all should.

I think he's the best example of why wars are so utterly pointless.
He could just as easily have been on the other side...in the end, it doesn't really matter, does it....we're all human beings...

I was talking the other day to a gentleman that once knew the great New Zealand Air ace Johnnie checketts..and I said to him then, how sad it is that we often see the greatest in people and in the same instant the very worst.....

God speed, Herr Rall.

I think I knew him a little. "Brainfarts" was his regular comment on heroes kitsch of that kind.

So, would he? And I can confirm that Günther never was so tasteless to express such nasty words in a condolence thread.
