Ju88 los from 21/22.01.44

Hi all

Can someone please tell me the loss data of the following machine (WNr., Code).

Ju 88
the loss took place on the night of 21/22. January 1944 before Worthing/GB.
The machine should have belonged to I./KG 76.
Two crew members were then washed ashore at Worthing:
Uffz Hermann Hollmann
Gefr Heinz Anskat
Many thanks for your help

Possibly not loss.

These two crew BF and BS are 22.01.44 and belonged to Ju 88 A-4 300499 F1+JH.
(Salonen NVM). but F Lt. Martin Traber and KB Obgefr. Hans Konradt unknown fate.

But A-4 300499 was attacked by night fighter in "January 1944" and dropped bombs.
(separate document NARA RG.242)

Fate Ju 88 300499 is recorded as burnt out, found at wars end at Alhorn.
RAF A.I.2.(g) 269

To me these possibly baled out, but others returned on damaged aircraft
but thats just speculating.

Hi Jochen,

the Ju 88 got into heavy Flak and went out of control during evasive action. Traber ordered the crew to abandon the plan ("jump").
Traber was able to recover the plane and returned together with Konrad(t) to their base.

Both, Traber (* 26.12.22, Apolda) and Konrad (* 19.7.22, Kirchdorf), later joined 1./KG 66 and died 11.4.1945 at Moordorf, at the eastern shore of "Steinhuder-Meer", in a Ju 88 S-3 (330957, Z6+MH). Both finally rest at Neustadt/Rübenberge in graves 20 and 21 (here: spelling of Konrad according to Volksbund).

Regards, Uwe K.

Re: Ju88 los from 21/22.01.44

Hi all

Very interesting.
Thank you very much for your information, Uwe, Matti and Ed.

For I./KG 66 I have another question:
According to my information, the I./KG 66 was between 26.03-29.04.45 in Tutow-Süd.
Moordorf is located about 2km N of the airfield Wunstorf. Were any parts of the group in Wunstorf ?

best wishes
JoMe

Hi "JoMe",
> Were any parts of the group in Wunstorf ?
As far as i know: NO
Fliegerhorst Wunstorf was occupied by allied forces since 7. April 45.
Some quick second source info about Wunstorf history: https://www.relikte.com/wunstorf/index.htm

You could also refer to the well known "Luftwaffe airfiels" book series, authored by Jürgen Zapf (volume: Niedersachsen). I have it in my private library - but am to lazy know to move from my couch to look up the page.

Regarding I./KG 66 and their bases in 1945:
- in January 45 they were based at Dedelstorf
- when allied troups approached the Weser and Elbe lines, I./KG 66 relocated to Fliegerhorst Tutow-Süd
- when the Red-Army advanced from the east, I./KG 66 relocated to Neumünster (29.4.45)
- final fligths were made on 8.5.45, evacuation of troops from the "Kurland-Kessel"

On 11.4.45 the task was: bombing of troops in the Diepholz area. I./KG 66 lost 5 Ju 88, one crew got back (plane lost over own territory), 4 crews were lost.

Regards, Uwe K.

Hi Uwe

Ah, there Wunstorf was already occupied.
I did not even think about that.

Thank you, Uwe and regards

Re: Ju88 los from 21/22.01.44

Ed is correct. There is the following note in the NVM documents "Uffz Hollmann über See auf Befehl mit Fallschirm abgesprungen. 1944-01-23 tot angeschwemmt. Gefr Anskat über See auf Befehl mit Fallschirm abgesprungen. 1944-01-23 tot angeschwemmt."
The rest of the crew was unwounded.
