Spitfire ID and base

Is a 72 Squadron Spitfire but have conflicting info. One source, a photo, says Drem 1939 and the other says a Mk Vb at Biggin Hill 1941.

Much appreciated any info.

To give more detail, the fin flash and yellow surround weren't seen before May 1940, and the Sky trim with Yellow leading edge after the Battle of Britain. The cannon came even later.

Hello,

An uncropped shot of No.72 Sqn Spitfire RN-N, appears in Tom Docherty's, Swift to Battle Vol.1:1937 to 1942 (p.141) The photo is accredited to Cpl Graeme Gillard, who was an airframe fitter with 72 Sqn., and took many (illegal), candid shots of the squadron's activities. The photo is captioned: A 72 Sqn Spitfire climbs away from Ackilington in 1941 with RN-N in the foreground (G. Gillard).

Col

The only problem with Gillards remembrance is that he doesn't say when the photo was taken. Depending on date, 1941, both Acklington and Biggin Hill is correct.

I have been to Biggin myself (way back admittedly) but judging from the photo I wouldn't risk my life where it was taken...

Semantic I know, I know, but if I start splitting hairs, I suppose just me wishing we had more exact dates with our lovely oldtimers.

Nothing personal Col, I always enjoy your expertice, and certainly not against Gillard either!!

Cheers
Stig

The back of the photo, http://www.warbirdsforum.com/topic/6...e-2#entry49996

As can be seen official looking stamps so not one of the 'illegal' photos.
