Fw190 loss

Hi,

On the 7th June 1944 during an offensive patrol Wg Cdr A D Phillips, HR138/Y, 248 Sqn, spotted a Fw190 through broken cloud. He gave chase and fired off a number of short bursts, eventually hitting the fighter, which rolled over and dived into the sea killing the pilot.

Does anyone have details of the Fw190 pilot and what unit he was from?

At least 11 Fw190s from 7 different units were lost over the "west" that day. Do you have any other details like a time or location?

Hi,

The claim was made at 1150hrs. Earlier in the morning the Mosquitos had taken off for a patrol over the Brest area, so I would asume they were still in the area when the claim was made.

Well, no one lists someone as crashing into the sea, but this might be a candidate:

Fw190A-8, WNr 170740, Fischer, Ltn. Wolfgang, 3.JG 2gelbe1 +, 07-Jun-44, POW after Luftkampf with Spitfires and P-47s. FSA., Ring, JG 2 loss list, p.25; Frappé, La LW face au débarquement allié, p.16, 313; Ver-Sur-Mer.

In spite of the listing as lost by Spitfires and P-47s, this location is right on the coast of Normandy and is in the British invasion area which, presumably, the Mosquitos might have been covering.

Hi John,

Thanks for the details. On looking again at the ORB the Fw190 was chased in and out of cloud so it could be possible that the Spitfires, P47s and Mossies all had a crack at it.
