ATTN: Larry Hickey

According to letters from two former members of I./JG 76, later II./JG 54, Ltn./Oblt. Heinz Stegmann served as the Adjutant of the Gruppe from 1 Jan. 1939 to 27 Sept. 1940, when he went MIA.

Larry & Rabe,

Don't know what this thread refers to - I escaped my desk for a few days but I have Oberlt Dietrich HRABAK as Gruppenadjutant from 1 July 1938 until May 1940 when he took over the 4 Staffel & was succeeded by Heinz STEGMANN. Hope it helps.

Grüß Gott Peter!

My face is very red, Peter, but mea culpa, I must confess to erroneous reporting in the instance of Dietrich Hrabak and Heinz Stegmann's service with I./JG 76 (later II./JG 54).

According to personal letters and a conversation with Dietrich Hrabak at a Geschwadertreffen at Memmingen, Germany, I have the following info which is congruent with yours and, I believe, with E. Obermaier:

Dietrich Hrabak - Gr.Adj. I./JG 76, 1 Jul. 1938-31 Mar. 1939
- Stkp. 1./JG 76, 1 Apr. 1939-ca. 15 Aug. 1940

Heinz Stegmann - Gr.Adj. I./JG 76, 1 Apr. 1939-27 Sept. 1940

Re: ATTN: Larry Hickey

Thanks Jim and Peter,

I'm satisfied we have the Adj. of I./JG76-II./JG54 settled through 27.9.40. Does anyone know who replaced Stegmann through the end of 1940. Does anyone know who the 1A, TO and NO was for this unit (s). I know Ziegler was the TO until he was shot down, but don't know when he took over that position.

Jim, did you get my e-mail?

Thanx in advance for any further assistance.

Regards,

Re: ATTN: Larry Hickey

Hi,

I think that Lt.B.Malischewski was also member of staff section from September 1939.

Re: ATTN: Larry Hickey

Yes,

Robert is right about Malischewski with the code <i+ being on the Stab of I./JG76-II./JG54, until he was shot down and captured during the Battle of Britain. Does anyone know what his staff position was, possible 1A or NO, and who succeeded him at that position? Ziegler went down in an aircraft with the code <-, so this may have been the staff symbol for the TO in this unit at the time.

Regards,

Hi Larry,

Your assumption regarding ZIEGLER (TO) & MALISCHEWSKI (NO) squares with my records. I also have an Obergefr Simon HELMBERGER flying with the Stabsschwarm of II./JG54 until his death in action on 23 November 1940. But nothing else to offer I'm afraid.

Email on its way to you shortly.

Re: ATTN: Larry Hickey

Rabe & Peter,

According to Mombeek in Jagdwaffe, Luftwaffe Colours Vol. 1, No. 3 Hrabak became Adjutant of I./JG 138 (later I./JG 134) on 1 April 38 and was appointed Staffelkapitän of 1./JG 134 (later 1./JG 76) on 1 Jan 39. This latter date is also found in Obermaier's Die Ritterkreuzträger der Luftwaffe as well as in Prien's Der Jagdflieger Verbände...Teil 1.
So I am curious about the source of your information.

Tom
