Re: Strange rudder ..

Hello Remi,

I am uncertain what you are seeing, but this is a fine example of a tall metal tail unit mounted to all-black Bf109G-6/AS, 5+ blue, and photographed at Fliegerhorst Gardelegen.

Tall metal tails were modified from short metal tails and are identifiable by a seam (not visible here) where a new extended fin cap is attached to the original fin. Tall metal rudders were modified from the short units and retain their curved lower profile.

The aircraft is identifiable as a Bf109G-6/AS by its combination of: A refined cowling with no lower cowl bumps; an oil filler hatch in the lower position; small upper wing bumps; and a short tail wheel leg. In addition, it features a replacement-type Erla Haube. Note its tubular mounting bracket, barely visible on the angled rear part of the cockpit, as well by its antenna mast mounted to a bracket that extends back over the fuselage.

Re: Strange rudder ..

Marc,
I am confused. Your caption claims the color of the "5" is green, but to my old eyes, it looks blue. Also, I could not find the unit emblem for 2./Erg JG 2 in Ketley & Rolfe. Are you sure of this unit? If it was blue 5, wouldn't that put it with the 4th Staffel??

Re: Strange rudder ..

I believe it was originally thought to be green...but later was determined as blue.
