Air Gunner lucky kills !!!!
I have always been interested in the Air Gunner side of WW2 aviation and for no reason other than i find it facinating i would love to hear any tales you have read or been told about the activities of Air Gunners from any airforce successfully defending / shooting down hostile fighters. Not the usual story of B17 gunners or Lancaster Gunners, fantastic they are but,I find the uneven battles the most interesting, surley a Storch gunner or Fairy Battle gunner downed some fighters when all looked lost ? What about the Vickers K in the back of a Lysander, did any gunner ever down a fighter in this type?
Just to get the mood set,i spoke with several Blenheim gunners last year at Duxford. I think it was Jack Toombs who served with 236 Squadron mentioned an incident when alone in their Blenheim at wave height returning from france in 1940 they were attacked by two 109's. Jack said that he shot all is .303 from the top turret and missed he thinks with every round. In desperation he threw a few spanners out at them and then shot a single flare from flare pistol at them and by pure luck it exploded in between them, they both reared up and clipped each other forcing them both into the channel. As Mr Toombs said it was luck but he would not have been here today as they would have got him.
I am not researching for any book, but will appreciate any tales you have.
Thanks
Jon
