Do. 18 Engaged by 254 Blenheims 21/06/40

Five minutes before two o'clock on a blustery 21st June, 1940 three fighter Blenheim's engaged a Do. 18 did it make it back to base?

From the A/K/M - 254 Report the crew say they may have killed one or two of the Do 18's gunners?

254 left a Sunderland of 204 to fend for itself which was then engaged by Bf109's.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yours faithfully

Andy Bird

Hi Andy

"Fledgling Eagles" pp350 indicates that the 2 Blenheims attacked a He.115 without result.

Andy,

No corresponding casualties or aircraft damage reported in relevant Lw records. It would seem that No.254 Squadron would have been better employed sticking to their brief on this occasion ?

204 Squadron, Sullom Voe

Sunderland I N9028. Returned damaged in attacks by Bf109s while shadowing Scharnhorst. F/L [ ] Phillips and rest of crew unhurt. Aircraft KG*A repairable.

Thank you gentleman, certainly the combat report did seem to be over optimistic. As you said Peter they should have stayed as 'fighter protection'.

Best Wishes

Andy

At least, they possibly saved their lives, because against 109, the outcome was
often bad for the Blenheims

Hi,

it was Do 18 K6+IH from 1./K.Fl.Gr.406 and it had been not damaged. The combat lasted for 15 minutes.

Regards

Robert

Andy,

Can I get a copy of the combat report for the Blenheims from you? As you can see from Robert's post, we already have the report on the German side of that encounter for the EOE Project.
