Cause of death of Beaufighter LX928/D

Colleagues.
I found a contradictory entry from November 13, 1943, about the loss of a No. 47 Squadron Beaufighter LX928/D.
Shot down by fighter attacking convoy near Leros. Starboard
engine on fire.
Drove ashore on Agios Nikolaos beach after being hit by return fire in a bomber engagement. Squadron Leader Stanley Muller-Rowland Sqn
Leader (pilot) and Lieutenant Commander J. D. Andrews were rescued by a fishing boat and returned to their unit via Turkey.

Shot down by Ltn. Emil Clade 7./JG27 N Levita.

Please help me determine the cause of this aircraft's loss. If I understand correctly, it was a joint mission with No. 603 Squadron to Leros, where No. 603 Squadron also lost an aircraft LX977/Z due to engine failure.

47 Sqn's F540 is here:

https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ils/r/D8412487

Clade's claim was 0855hrs while 47 Sqn was airborne 1340-1830hrs

It won't open for me. Maybe it's blocked in Ukraine?

You need to register for an account (it is free).
You will then be able to download files for free.

It won't open at all. The power and communications situation in Ukraine is extremely poor right now. I can't even open many of the stashes I've been making for a long time. That's why I'm asking for help.

Re: Cause of death of Beaufighter LX928/D

According to the F540 it was return fire from the Ju 88; quite a descriptive account of what happened

Thank you. The only details I'm interested in are the participants, time, location, and outcome of the fight.

Re: Cause of death of Beaufighter LX928/D

All these details are in the F540. If you PM me your email address, I will download, scan and email to you

This aircraft crashed south of Crete at 10:42. The takeoff was at 07:00. It was probably a morning sortie by 603 Squadron, and Klade made his claim based on the encounter at 08:55.

No sightings of enemy aircrfat were seen according to the ORB and that they ditched due to engine trouble

Re: Cause of death of Beaufighter LX928/D

And what Beaufighters was Clade fighting north of Levita at 08:55?

Chris Goss 8th December 2025 12:23

Re: Cause of death of Beaufighter LX928/D

It all depends on the times used. At this time, we were on BST (GMT+1) while Germans were CET (also GMT+1 so a claim for 0855hrs would not match with a loss at 1042hrs while even if the Germans were and hour ahead, there is nearly an hour's difference. However, I am no expert at times used. There is also the possibility of another aircraft type if indeed one was lost

Colleague, thank you very much. Finally, everything is clear!

Do you still need a scan of the F540 if so which Squadron?

Re: Cause of death of Beaufighter LX928/D

If possible, 46 squadrons for the same period.

I thought you wanted 47 Sqn which I have downloaded and have now downloaded 46 Sqn (who were not flying 13 Nov 43)

Re: Cause of death of Beaufighter LX928/D

I was able to open the 47 squadron, but now I’m trying to open the 46 squadron and the computer can’t handle it again – poor voltage.

Thank you so much! I received everything!

Re: Cause of death of Beaufighter LX928/D

It is strange that on November 15, only the flight of the 47th Squadron with the crash was recorded, but there is no mention of the flight of a group of 4 aircraft from the 47 Sqn, 3 603 Sqn and 2 B-25Gs, which we wrote about in the topic "B-25 in the Aegean Sea". This event is in the 603 Squadron log!

This November 13 engagement is not recorded in the 47 Squadron log, but it is in the 603 Squadron log. During a morning sortie (takeoff 07:25), at 09:47, 6 Me 109s attempted to attack a B-25G but were repelled by one of 47 Squadron's Beaufighters.

It is there for Records (out of sequence) but not for Summary
