Hello!

I started wondering the above as IV/JG54 was at the time based at Tartu (Dorpat, Estonia) minus the 12./JG54 which was at Petseri (Pechory). In other words nowhere near the Gulf of Filnland.

In Wood's list is given grid 99553. More precisely it's 25 Ost 99553 and the location is near Pljussa (about midway between Pskov and Luga).

I find it unlikely that the Boston Leykauf claimed was the 1 GMTAP/Sharygin one. If it indeed was the one they were far away from their normal operation area. Which was Baltic Sea, more precisely Gulf of Finland area in March 1944.

The claim-loss matches are not an easy "business" and are prone to errors.

Kari

Re: JG54 Victories

Kari, The match for JG54 was already done on www.bellabs.ru/51/ . Leykauf was the only one that I could find to match that day in JG54. As far as the grids go, I tried to get someone to locate one that should have been in Russia but came up in Poland. Maybe it was an error on the grid or the person with the 1GMTAP history but they were a naval bomber unit hitting naval and transport targets. Maybe the answers can come up on this thread.

Best regards,
Nokose

47 ShAP KBF raid on Libua 14Dec44 lost 10 Il-2's one being Lt Col. Nelson Georgievich Stepanyan & crew (KIA). Seven other crews were also KIA.
(See www.allaces.ru ) All from attacks by FW-190's. No listing on Tony Woods list.

Re: JG54 Victories

Overall, in this raid, 13 Il-2s were lost, they were considered both victims of FW-190 and AAA.
3 other planes (1 Yak-9 and 2 A-20s, the Bostons were both shot down by AAA) were lost on this raid, for a final total of 16 aircraft.
10 Il-2s were also damaged.
21 enemy planes were claimed shot down by soviet pilots.

All this according to "Aviatsiya VMF v Velikoi Otechestvennoi Voine".

According to John Weal's Osprey book " Jagdgeschwader 54 'Gruenherz' ", JG54 claimed 44 victories that day.

Mayor Viktor Alexandrovich Rozhdestvenskii (KIA) (Last name translates as Christmas) 12 IAE KBF was shot down in his MiG-3 attacking a lone Ju-88 after two Bf-109's dived on him. He departed from Vystav but his crash location was Zhikharevo.

6./JG54 Fw Alfred Dettke MiG-3 (24) 10:05 PlQu 10244

I don't know which PlQu equates closer to Zhikharevo. If it's 10271 it's a over claim by by Heyer or Stern.

Mayor Viktor Rozhdestvenskiy

Hello Nokose

I used the Luftwaffe grid location map calculator at www.gyges.dk/LUMA.xls and if I am using it correctly, which is a very big if, I got that the two claims by Heyer and Stern are closer to Zhikharevo (Zhicharevo on the map) than the claim by Dettke. Heyer's and Stern's claim are about four miles to the west and Dettke's claim is about six and a half miles north-northwest of Zhicharevo by my results. Please note that I used 36 Ost as the prefix. If anyone else would care to compare these results to those of their own it would be a nice thing as I am not very sure how to use that calculator correctly.

Horrido!

Leo

Re: JG54 Victories

Rozhdestvenskiy's crash was suppose to be close enough to Zhikharevo for the towns people to bury him. So it must have been a sharp glide down to the crash point.

Kari,
Reference Post #8 (18Feb07) for Erwin Leykauf. I looked at Tony Woods list and it doesn't have it listed as 25 Ost only 99553. If you look at 15Ost/99553 it's west of Estonia and in the Gulf of Finland area. I believe that's why they listed it to JG54. German sea convoys would have been in that area.

Hello!

15Ost99553 is over Gotska Sandön-island which is Swedish territory on Baltic Sea. It is not Gulf of Finland area. Distance from Tartu (Dorpat) some 360 km.

25Ost99553 is near Pljussa some 130 km from Tartu. Though Leykauf may have flown also from Pskov. Leykauf claimed over German 18th Army area (see attachment).

Decide yourself which one is the more likelier.

Cheers,
Kari

Re: JG54 Victories

Kari,
I looked at it again and they have that plane being lost in the Baltic Sea with credit for it's loss as 11./JG54. The PlQu that I looked at in JFV 6/II shows it as open sea above that island. It also showed that they had been making raids in the Tallin area in days before this incident.

Kari Lumppio 15th January 2008 09:48

Re: JG54 Victories

Hello!

Please. Consider the geography also. Took a look of this map for example:
http://www.bellabs.ru/51/Index/Map-Baltic800.html

In my mind there is no doubt whatsoever that Leykauf did NOT claim his Boston over Baltic Sea. Gotska Sando is not near Tallinn for heaven's sake.

What is possible is that the 1 GvMTAP Boston was on one of the "standard" return routes from Baltic Sea which went over Bay of Riga towards East until over frontline and then back to home base. This would take the plane to the area near Pljussa. A PoW interrogation protocol explains these routes and this I have learned after my posting in Feb 2007 (#8).

In other words I find it now plausible that it indeed was 1 GvMTAP Boston. But the shoot-down location is over land, near Pljusssa.

Kari

Yes. Just what I was thinking. Very odd to mistake a 109 for a I-15, with or without the white spinner.
I'm still curious about the fact that are no losses on Soviet records.
But, on the other hand, I find it hard to believe that Nowotny forged his first victories.

Re: JG54 Victories

This is an old thread for me from almost my beginning here but I don't like to post bad information. On Post #7 I obtained some information from www.luftwaffe.cz that had Oblt. Hans Beisswenger 6./JG 54 shooting down two LaGG-3 on the 03 Mar 1943 belonging to the 32 GIAP (one of the Soviet pilots being Ivan Mikhaylovich Kholodov). I checked in Prien's JFV 12/III and he did not make any claim for two LaGG-3 on that date and also checked JFV 9/III and no claim. So I don't have any idea where that information came from on that site. I try a lot harder to confirm my information now but don't list for JG 54. If I find anymore mistakes I'll post.

Nokose 17th August 2014 19:35

Re: JG54 Victories

Another correction this time for Post #24. The Pe-2s were from the 82 GBAP (1 GBAD) and were led this day by Mayor Vasiliy Grigor'evich Pchelkin (MIA). So not the 82 BAP. Considering the number of losses claimed instead 4 Pe-2 to fighters and 1 Pe-2 to AAA (Some Soviet planes listed as AAA also fell to German fighters because they were already damaged and the Soviets didn't see the finish off. It might actually be 5 Pe-2 to fighters.)

In Tony Woods list it has Weiss claiming a Pe-2 at 17:07 on the 23 Aug 1943 but now that I have Prien's JFV 12/III it shows this is incorrect. It lists Weiss shooting down an Airacobra (54) at 17:07. So here is the corrected.

Re: JG54 Victories

Greeting,

as the Normandie-Niemen Memorial asked me the question for a ceremony, I also share the information with you:
On October 15 at 11:40 a.m. (Soviet time), 8 Yak took off for a troop protection mission in the Lenino-Baevo sector (on the Belarus - Russia border - 65 km WSW of Smolensk). At 12 p.m., they engage in combat with 4 FW-190s.
Result: claim 2 FW-190 destroyed and 2 damaged (no trace seems to me of such loss in the German archives)
1 Yak-9 is shot down, pilot Lt Léo Barbier. On the 25th, the Soviets informed the French that he had been buried at Ivanovka/
On Oct 15, 1943, Ulrich Wohnert of 2./JG 54 claimed a LaGG-3 at 300m at 10:04 a.m. (German time or 12:04 p.m. Soviet time) in sector 15 534 (NE Gorki).
The village of Ivanovka is 6.5 km from the center of sector 15334/

The time and the place are concordant, the victory is thus confirmed "scientifically".

And I have serious eyesight problems, especially with the miniscuke letters from TOCH, and the last ophthalmologist I saw told me to close one eye and you'll see. 8 years of study to get here.... We are treated better in a UN dispensary in Somalia than in a French clinic...
