Hptm Hans-Christian Schafer JG5

Hi guys

There is a photo of him standing by the tail of his Bf109, which records eight victories. I believe he claimed two in France May 1940 (with 5./JG27), two with 2./JG77 Norway 1941, followed by four at least with 4./JG5 in 1942.

My notes indicate two of these as Hurricanes on 17 Feb 1942 and 4 March 1942. Do we know when he claimed his final (?) two?

Cheers
Brian

There is a thread devoted to him on the forum: http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=22608

Maybe you will find the answer there.

Hi Guys

I have just had the opportunity to view Schäfer's rudder, and I am informed it is Schäfer's. Seems he made eight claims in all.

I zoomed in and played around with the image as much as I can, and can say that as we know numbers 1 & 2 are marked as claimed in the West(JG 27), the next four I cannot be certain but appear also to be against Western aircraft, the seventh is for sure carrying the Sowiet star, and cannot be sure on the eighth, but likely also Sowiet. Sometimes unconfirmed claims were included on the rudder markings.......Herbert Rollwage's for sure, by memory his third claim, and marking was unconfirmed, and was marked as so.

I would say that with all likelihood Schäfer had eight confirmed claims, two with JG 27, four with JG 77 and two with JG 5. However I do not believe(or cannot make-out) dates on the rudder claims bars, so cannot confirm those I listed except those with JG 27. Perhaps somebody more computer literate than myself can play with the photo.

Kind Regards

Johannes

Hi Brian

How absolutely sure are you that this is Schäfer's rudder? I only ask because there is the possibility that the last six claims on the rudder are marked with the Sowiet star !

Hi Johannes

I'm not certain! I found the picture on Pinterest images, with his name so attributed.

Are you able to scan so that other members can see and offer suggestions?

Cheers

Hi Brian

I can scan, but have never established how to add files on TOCH. Any suggestions?

Kind Regards
