3 109s claimed by Mustangs 27 May '44
On 27 May '44 Bud Anderson and his flgiht or 4 Mustangs were engaged initially by 4 109s. The 4 P-51s got the advantage and 3 109s ran while 1 climbed.
Anderson and his wingman (Skara) chased after the 3 running, the other 2 Mustangs went after the lone 109 that climbed. The lone 109 was shot down, Anderson shot down 2 other 109s and the fourth 109 got away. Andersons victory lists shows the 2 109s he claimed as shot down 'northwest of Strasbourg'. You can read a version of this engagement here. I am looking to identify the pilots and unit of the 3 lost 109s. Thanks, Wotan |

Possibly aircraft of JG 5 as at least two were lost in that vicinity.

II/JG27 was also in action in this vicinity.

Thansk for the replies. I checked Tony Woods site for LW claims on this date.
In addition to JG 27 and JG 5 being in the area JG 53 made claims (one listed as near Strasbourg). Stab III./ JG 3 and elements of III./JG 54 have claims as well. The times of these claims began at 12.15 (Fhr. Kurt Rüdiger - P-51 5-6000m @ 12.15) and end at 12.45 (Fw. Baumgert - P-51 8000m @ 12.45). |

II/JG53 lost 4 ME109s. II/JG27 lost 6. They intercepted a box of B17s and their P51 escort "southeast of Nancy".
I/JG5 reported it lost 7 pilots (not clear if KIA or WIA nor how many a/c). III/JG3 lost 7 a/c and 3 pilots KIA. One of the KIA pilots had recorded 13 victories. He crashed near Gerardmer. Prien's unit history described the action as occuring around Colmar-Gerardmer area. |
