Info needed on Kassel aircraft dump in 1945...

Hey guys,

I recently acquired some aircraft relics from a US vet belonging to the 429th Fighter Squadron (P-38s) of the 474th Fighter Bomber Group. He said he collected them from field on the outskirts of Kassel, Germany in the spring of 1945. Form what he recalls, there were a lot of (what he termed) "experimental" aircraft in various derelict condition...mentioned jets as well as Ju88's with piggyback mounted aircraft on them (obviously a Mistel).

Can anyone narrow down this specific airfield/dump? If so, any current photos?

TIA

Mike

Maybe Kassel-Calden, Rothwesten or Fritzlar.

I suspect Kassel-Rothwesten. The 1st Air Depot Group was responsible for the collection of a lot of FE aircraft.

There was a rumour (friend who did his military service in Rothwesten) going round many years back when I lived in Kassel that Rothwesten had underground storage which was simply flooded and left like that.

All the best

Dear Mike,

Take a look at pages 28 to 30 in Wings of the Black Cross, Number Nine, by Mark Proulx, and the back cover of Wings of the Black Cross, Number Ten, also by Mark Proulx, for photos of some of the various captured flying hardware at Kassel.

Regards,
Richard
