Question for Chris Goss

Hi Chris,

I've just finished reading your excellent book 'Dornier 17 In Focus'. Another exceptional book with excellent photographs, which will proudly sit with all my other Luftwaffe books (an ever growing collection!).

My question is, on page 40, in the caption for the bottom photo, you say "Oblt. Dietrich Marwitz of III/KG3 in the cockpit of his Do 17Z, early in the Polish campaign. Marwitz would be lost in action flying with 8/KG30 on 27 Oct 40."

I have checked my records, and have found no loss for Marwitz on this date or anywhere between June 1940 - June 1941.

Can you kindly let me know more about the loss of Marwitz and his crew?

Kind regards, and once again, thank you for all your help
Steve

Re: Question for Chris Goss

The NVM dated 29 Oct 40 says he was lost 27 Oct 40 in Ju 88 A-1, 5J+HS, 6048 of 8./KG 30 Last message was that they were about to ditch in the Humber Estuary. Handwritten note also says probably Flak. BTW, that book is pretty old now and will be superseded by my Do 17 in Combat from Crecy later this year

Re: Question for Chris Goss

Hello Chris,

asccording to the Gen.Qu. loss return 28 Oct 1940 item 26 this aircraft belonged to the 8./KG 30. In the amendment from 29 Oct 1940 this entry was corrected: Ändere Dienststelle in 8./KG 4.

Regards
Leo

Re: Question for Chris Goss

Thanks Chris, I've now found it. I had a different spelling on the names:
Oblt. Dietrich Marlwitz (FF, Staffelkapitän), Oberfw. Werner Ehrbach (B), Gefr. Karl Herold (Bf), Uffz. Hubert Schmitz (Bs) all missing.
I will now correct my records accordingly. That's the trouble with computers, if its not spelt right, computer says 'no' !!

Re: Question for Chris Goss

This was when III./KG 4 became III./KG 30 hence the 5J not 4D codes. NVM says Mehrbach not Ehrbach
