Stab,I,III/StG2 losses in May 1941

Dear friends,
Regarding the previous post for the Molaoi airfield i have heard a strange story about a Stuka which crashed near the airfield while returning from Crete. When the Germans find the plane the members of the crew were dead and from one of them the finger with the wedding ring was missing! One sheperd had cut off the finger of the pilot to take the ring. Finally the Germans found him and later he was executed.
At the Molaoi airfield at that time there were Stab,I,III/StG2 and this incident took place probably during the Battle of Crete. So,i need your help to find more about it.
Thank you

Hello Tasos,

This story seems to be true.I came across an equivelant some time ago and it was listed that the place the aircraft crashed was nearby a place called "Kapogia" which should be near to a village named Richia i suppose.Maybe its an old name which has changed with the time because i couldnt locate it.Unfortunately this document is in my old computers HD which makes me problems and i dont know if i can retrieve it.As soon as it happens i will show you.
Maybe you know the right place's name and the a/c's markings/name of the pilots.

regards,

Aviator

Re: Stab,I,III/StG2 losses in May 1941

Thank you very much for your responses.
During the past 5 years I managed to find exact information about that incident I had heard of.

The aircraft was not a Ju-87 but a Me-109. The dead pilot was uffz. Willi Hagel of 4./JG 77 who crash landed near Molaoi the 14th May 1941.
The exact area of the crash called ''Pacogia'' and it is situated near the village Rihea.

Dear Aviator , I was surprised about the accuracy of your information. I am very interested to know the source. Is it from german records or from some pilot's memoirs?

Hello Tasos,
Thank you for your feedback. It seems that its not meant the single seater Me 109 because more than one crew members are mentioned. And the only one aircraft meant can be a Ju 87R.lets see if this all fits with a loss list.
The document is a memoire from Manoli Panariti "Selides Imerologiou".See the part of it.

Aviator

Re: Stab,I,III/StG2 losses in May 1941

Thank you Aviator. I also have this part of the memoire. It was published by a greek newspaper in Canada some years ago. It is a very interesting first-hand account of the everyday life in Laconia during WWII but in the case of the aircraft crash it lacks of accuracy.
I have met two eye-witnesses from that area and furthermore I have found two books of memoires which refer to that incident. All of them agree that it was a single-seated aircraft , a Me-109.
By the way , do you speak greek?
