Hurricane downed in Med.
On 17 July, 1943, an USAAF OA-10 (Catalina) picked up a downed Hurricane pilot some 130 miles southeast of Malta. I believe the downed pilot had been at sea in his dinghy for some days before he was rescued.
Any information on the pilopt's name, his squadron and details of the Hurricane he was flying would be most welcome. Ragnar |
Re: Hurricane downed in Med.
Hello,
From 73 Squadron Part 2 by Don Minterne. pages 223 -5. Sgt. Cyril Edwards in HW242 9th July 1943. Rescue was down to a Baltimore or a Maryland. Fished out by an American PBY from Kalafrana which had come into an ASR role that very day. Was in a Hospital with an Army type who was the only survivor from a Glider that had been cast off way out to sea. 19th - It was learned today that Sgt Edwards had been picked up in his dinghy having been afloat from the small hours of the ninth to the evening of the 17th. I think that this is what you seek. Alex |
