There is more than one set of files that tell 'what happened'. Go to the catalogue and search 'DAILY', year '1940', Department 'AIR' and take your pick:
War Room Daily Summaries, Daily Resumés of Air Operations, A.M.W.R. daily reports for summary, Battle of Britain: daily state of operational aircraft and crews in Fighter Command, Daily summaries of operations, Daily operational summaries, etc.
One of them will be the one you are thinking of and hopefully something new will pop up as well.
