Mark, difficult to tell if it's red or not but if it is then theres a strong possibility that it is 'Red 6' prior to application of the experimental scheme. The numeral and the fuel octane triangle are in pretty much identical positions on both photos.
The experimental/non standard schemes were in use approximately from early October 1939. Then the airframes that had it applied started to be manually toned down around the beginning of 1940. With underlying evidence of the schemes still being visible on machines well into the BOB and possibly beyond.
