Some early production Junkers Ju87D-1s had the Ju87B sub-type's undercarriage spats, ie big and chunky, and without the leather cover on the leg. According to Squadron/Signal
Junkers Ju87 in action, this was because of flight trial weaknesses in the landing gear forks and mainwheels of the new-style undercarriage, so the decision was taken to go with an arrangement that was already proven to be satisfactory.
