IL-2 with yellow wingtip

Finnish Air Force HQ reports that on 4th July 1944 five or six IL-2s were observed having yellow wingtips when they strafed Vilaniemi at Karelian Isthmus. Were these markings some sort of identification for the Guards Regiment?

T-19283/116.

Re: IL-2 with yellow wingtip

Guards Regiments usually used RED or WHITE for their markings, yellow was not used very much for this kind of thing so it wouldn't be confused with Luftwaffe markings. (they loved yellow)

also the markings were usually painted spinners (red or white instead of camoflage colors)or tips of the fin/rudder.
I've never heard of wingtip markings like this being used by the Soviets.

Re: IL-2 with yellow wingtip

Kari Lumpio pointed me out that these were probably FW-190s from 1./SG 5 rather than IL-2s. Wrong identification during the "kujanjuoksu" chaos on Summer 1944.

Re: IL-2 with yellow wingtip

with Yellow wingtips I kind of suspected they were Luftwaffe aircraft.
but, I didn't have any proof.

that's a pretty bad mis-identification ; the Il-2 doesn't look anything like the FW-190...
