Can anyone identify these aircraft?

There were two aircraft visible behind this picture of an Ar196 of 1 Staffel Bordfliegergruppe 196 on the apron of the Fliegerdeich air base in Wilhelmshaven.

Is there anyone who can identify them, please?

Tony

Re: Can anyone identify these aircraft?

Hi, Tony...

They're Junkers W34s, floatplane version, similar to attached thumbnail.

Regards...

Thank you.
I see they were used to train pilots and radio operators, which is of course what they were doing.

Re: Can anyone identify these aircraft?

Tony

Since one of them carries a civil registration pre-fixed by WL it is also possible to say the photo was approximately taken in late 1939 or early 1940.

Has anyone any exact dates when WL prefixed civil registered aeroplanes were in use??

Cheers
Stig

Re: Can anyone identify these aircraft?

Hi, Stig...

The 'WL' (Wermacht Luft) coding was used from 1 January until 24 October, 1939. It was used to denote military aircraft used for training purposes during this brief period, prior to which all civil and second-line military machines had used the nationality code 'D' as a prefix to their registration code. After the change in coding, 'D' was reserved for exclusive use on civil machines.

There were some exceptions to the use of 'WL' in relation to small aircraft with restricted fuselage space, and other types, such as armed trainers, were seen in operational use during the Polish campaign with the 'WL' coding.

Above information in Luftwaffe Camouflage, 1935-40 by Alain Fleuret (Kookabura)

Re: Can anyone identify these aircraft?

Thanks Lowlander (nor sure if you are classified as highlander or not), but it feels kind of stupid to refer you to obdl3945...)

Since I have the book you refer to (and browsed through it yesterday, found nothing in particular) can you say where this is mentioned?

Anyway it is nice to get dates to these markings. I had in the back of my mind they came to around late 1939 and lasted roughly to spring 1940, which shows one should not rely on that place if it can be avoided...

Cheers
Stig

Re: Can anyone identify these aircraft?

Thank you for all of this.
You might be interested in the complete photo, an aerial of the apron where the photo was taken, and the site today which is under the Helgolandhaus apartments.
I'm sure all of the activity concerned getting the Admiral Graf Spee and Admiral Hipper to sea in August 1939.
