Help with translation?

Can anyone help translate this? Found on the back of a photo of an Fw 189 of Aufkl.Gr. 31. I believe it is an A-2. Thanks.

Chuck

Re: Help with translation?

Thanks for the quick response. Sounds like it might have been a ground accident.

Re: Help with translation?

Chuck/Byron...

I think the word 'Maschinen' is used here to mean the aircraft itself, rather than 'engines', ie 'In one of these machines Alfred met his death'.

Re: Help with translation?

The first 2 words are der Flugplatz (the Airport) not das Flugzeug (the airplane).

Re: Help with translation?

The first line in the caption is Dno Flugplatz. This is an aircraft belonging to 1.(H)/Aufkl.Gr. 31, which was frequently based at Dno from March 43 to Jan 44:

.............
15.3.43: Fw 189 damaged by bombs during enemy air raid on Fp. Dno, 35%.
22.3.43: Fi 156 damaged by bombs during enemy air raid on Fp. Pskov, 40%.
16.4.43: Fw 189 damaged taxiing at Fp. Dno, 35%.
10.5.43: Fw 189 shot up by ground fire over Karasisha, 70%, 1 KIA and 2 WIA.
5.43: transferred to Fp. Ashevo/115 km SE of Pskov and still under NAGr. 11.
26.6.43: Ashevo - from around this date on, the Staffel’s losses were reported under the NAGr.
to which it was assigned.
9.43: transferred back to Dno.
11.43: operating from Dno and Idritsa, and now under NAGr. 8.
12.43: same as for 11.43, above.
1.44: Idritsa in support of 16th Army.
..............

Re: Help with translation?

@ Larry,

sorry but the caption clearly reads "der", not "Dno".

Best Regards
Norbert

Re: Help with translation?

Norbert - I hope we are both looking at the same word because it sure looks like Dno to me. The history of the Staffel is a perfect fit for Dno, too.
