Typhoon Loss 11 jul 43

At 1550 hrs on above date, Plt Off Ivan Mouat of 198 Sqn was shot down by 8./JG 26 "east of Ghent". Another note has this aircraft being shot down near Zaffelare so can anyone give me an accurate location of the crash?

Re: Typhoon Loss 11 jul 43

Hello Chris,
"Hawker Typhoon the combat history" by Richard Townshend Bickers ha on page 103 -
EJ966 609/198 - Shot down by Me109s near Terneuzen. 11.7.43.
FCL vol 2 has on page 108 -
198 Sqn Typhoon In - EJ966 - Rhubarb pm. Shot down by Me109 of JG2 over Neuzen.
Pilot P/O W.I.Mouat RCAF - POW.

"The JG 26 War Diary" Vol 2 has on page 116/7
11 July
Bad weather once again limited flying.
Obfw. Ellenrieder, up on a defensive patrol, was vectored to a pair of No.198 Sqd. Typhoons on a low level Rhubarb to Ghent, and shot one of them down.
11.7.43 - Obfw. Ellenrieder - Unit 8 - Claim 2nd Typhoon - East of Ghent - Time 1550 - 198 Sqd -Confirmed I.O.
I.O is explained on page 491 as a 4th category as a good chance of ultimate confirmation.

Hope this is of some help.

Alex

Re: Typhoon Loss 11 jul 43

Zaffelare is a few miles NE of Ghent, therefore in the absence of further details like a POW report, have you not answered your own question?

See he site http://www.luchtvaartgeschiedenis.be...n-te-zaffelare

Re: Typhoon Loss 11 jul 43

Thanks all and no, Martin, I did not answer my own question (which was based on a note) as the subsequent replies have proven! Where JG 2 came from as to who shot it down is a puzzle as is the location of Terneuzen (albeit I too have seen Neuven/Neuzen as a location as well)

Re: Typhoon Loss 11 jul 43

Terneuzen is a large town in the Netherlands on the coast due 15-20 miles north of Ghent

There is a famous canal linking the two together

Re: Typhoon Loss 11 jul 43

Hence my confusion! 36 km almost due north of Ghent in another country as opposed to Zaffelare being 24 km (by road) NE of Ghent
