Luftwaffe in Iraq

Hi All

Has anyone any details about the losses the Lufwaffe suffered in Iraq?
Two units were involved withing Kommando Junck
4./ZG 76
4./KG 4

Are the WNr for each unit known or are they lost to History??

Cheers
Stig

Re: Luftwaffe in Iraq

I guess you've seen 'Dust clouds over the middle east', if you haven't it's got some details of the operations of Oberst Junck's illfated Fliegerfuhrer Iraq, but no WNr's. It gives the force a strength of;

4./ZG76 (12 Bf110C)
A Kette from ZG26 (2 Bf110C)
4./KG4 (7 He111H-6) (though it seems only 5 were despatched; 5J+AM, 5J+LM, 5J+GM, 5J+AC and 5J+BC)
As well as 20 Ju52/3m's and 'a few Ju90's.

It appears that all of the despatched aircraft were lost, though it is not clear exactly whether all of the intended 20 plus transport aircraft were despatched and then destroyed/abandoned.

Re: Luftwaffe in Iraq

Thanks Guys

Yes I have Dust Clouds in the Middle East

I was thinking more about the front-line aeroplanes, but does anyone have the actual losses suffered in Iraq INCLUDING the Ju 52??

Cheers
Stig

Re: Luftwaffe in Iraq

Stig,

According to 'Eagle in flames' the operation cost '19 combat aircraft and two transports', but has no further details.

Martin Drewes, a night-fighter ace is the sole survivor from the Irak mission. He talks about this mission in his book, "Sombras da Noite" from Adler Editora.

Thumbs up Re: Luftwaffe in Iraq

Hello Stig,

Have you looked in on the LEMB site ?

There is a wealth of photos and some info on the Iraqi event there.
