22-23 March 1944.
626 Squadron. Lancaster JB599. UM-Q2. Op Frankfurt. Crew. F/O. G D. Kewley + Sgt. C. Craigie + F/O. T H. Prickett + F/O. P P. Dowd RCAF + Sgt. C. Saunders + Sgt. C.B. Mills + Sgt. W B. Dixon. Took off 1859 hrs Wickenby. Shot down by a night-fighter and crashed at Blasheim, 3km WSW of Lubbecke. The force of the crash coupled with the fire that followed, totally destroyed the Lancaster. All were buried at Blasheim, since when their remains have been brought to Hannover War Cemetery. At 18, Sgt Dixon was amongst the youngest airman killed on operations in 1944. RAF Bomber Command Losses Vol.5 W R. Chorley. Regards Peter. |
