German 'seaplane' lost 21/5/41 Crete??
Hi guys
Reading a book (Crete 1941 Eyewitnessed) about the invasion of Crete, I came across a first-hand account written by a Cretan soldier who claimed shooting down a 'hydroplane' with a machine-gun, at about 7.30 hours (am/pm?) on 21 May. He wrote ".... the plane lost its balance and plunged into the shallow waters near the beach at Perivolia ....." Any ideas? Cheers Brian |

Re: German 'seaplane' lost 21/5/41 Crete??
Hi Brian,
The only seaplane unit that comes in my mind is "Seenotstaffel 7" but I couldn`t find a casualty at 21.05.41. There was also a loss at that day from "Aufklärungsstaffel X. Fliegerkorps" with: FF. Fw. Richard Pielchen, Bf 110 (4O+DH, W.Nr. 2371) with BO. Oblt. Harald Triebel, both missed 21.05.41 Kreta . What about that?? |

Re: German 'seaplane' lost 21/5/41 Crete??
The 6th Seenotstaffel (not Gruppe) operated from Sicily in the war theater of Malta and Afrika.
For the Aegean sea was the 7th responsible. A very few number of planes of this unit (the 6th) apeared in Greece in different times. Seenotstaffel 7 d.Lw. (14.04.41-23.10.44)aufgestellt im 03.41 in Kiel am 14.04.41 Ankunft in Saloniki, am 07.05.41 in Phaliron mit zwei FW 58, vier He 59 und eine Ju 52 / See. 05.41Seenotstützpunkte in Molai, in Milos (Kdt. Ltn. Karl-Heinz Daehn) und ab 17.06.41 an der Sudabucht. Together with some planes of Wekusta 76, the 7th rescued over 200 men during the battle of Crete. |
