Questions on a Lancaster

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone of you could help me with this:
On February 21st, 1945 Lancaster RA516 (576 Squadron) crashed in the Netherlands.
Could anyone tell me where this airplane hit the ground (Weert, the Netherlands?)
I would also like to know what caused this airplane to crash.

Any help such as additional information and pictures are also very appreciated!
Thanks

Tom

Re: Questions on a Lancaster

Hello Tom,

The SGLO has this Lancaster recorded as lost near Weert as number T5272. Authors Boiten an MacKenzie believe that she was probably shot down bij Hptm Hermann Greiner of IV/NJG1 . At 23.40 he claimed a Lancaster west of Neuss. It was Greiners 48th victory.

Hope this helps,

Dennis

Re: Questions on a Lancaster

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for responding.
I didn't know that she was probably shot down by this nightfighter pilot. I've just looked up Greiner's claims lists and it shows that he shot down 2 Halifaxes this night, in stead of Lancasters. Could this be a misunderstanding by Greiner himself?
Could you tell me what number T5272 means? Is it just the number of SGLO's list? Or can I request additional information with this number?

Regards, Tom

Re: Questions on a Lancaster

Hello Tom,

T5272 is indeed the SGLO case number. Greiner did claim a Halifax but Boiten and MacKenzie believe he probably attached RA516.

“Lancaster RA516 of 576 Squadron is recorded as having crashed following a night fighter attack at 23.40 hrs, near # 48b of Mr. J. H. van Lier. At Hushoven, a few kilometers N of Weert. This Lancaster had earlier been damaged by Flak, and at 23.35 it was suddenly hit under the port wing root and burst into flames. In all probability, this aircraft was shot down by Hptm. Hermann Greiner, who claimed his 48th Abschuss to the W of Neuss at 23.40” NagdJagd War Diaries Vol. 2, page275, Theo Boiten and Rod MacKenzie.

Hope this helps.

What is your interest in RA516?

Dennis
