3 P-51s lost 19 September 1944

Hi guys

On 19 September 1944, White Flight of 364thFS/357thFG was lost on a sortie in the Emmerich area at about 1610. The leader Capt Bryce McIntyre was apparently shot down by a Spitfire, baled out and was captured. His two wingmen Lts Jacobs and Moeblus were also lost, but I have no details. Were they also victims of Spitfires?

If so, which Spitfire unit was responsible?

Cheers
Brian

Hi John

Thanks for that. I wonder why it has been suggested that McIntyre fell to a Spitfire - after all, he survived as a POW. Does anyone know what his returning POW questionaire states?

Were the other two killed?

Cheers
Brian

Brian,

It may be interesing to read this as well: http://www.cebudanderson.com/arnhemaffair.htm

The story says that they were shot down by German fighters, but repeated passes by nearby Spitfires had separated their flight from the others...

Regards,

Leendert

Boy, it would be interesting to find out where these three Mustangs went down. I used to detect near there, in Kleve. Danny

Danny,

Answer for two on the nimh.nl website with 1944 losses: in the Dutch-German border area.

Lt Moebius in 44-13801 at/near Angeren (Kamervoort) and Lt Jacobs in 43-6813 between Elten (Germany) and 's Heerenberg (Netherlands).

Regards,

Leendert

Wow, Leendert....between Elten and 's Heerenberg is a good area to search, with lots of woods and raised terrain Might have to give that a try sometime. By the way Leendert, which group in BE do you work with? Danny
