P-38 Colours in the Middle East
Hello,
From the now old Kookaburra book, Reference is made as follows on page 24- P38 Lightnings destined for North Africa were re-sprayed at modification centres [in the USA ?], dusty pink upper and azure blue undersurfaces. Some lightnings flown to North Africa for evaluation [ from the USA?] there carried British type light stone upper and azure blue undersurfaces. Later aircraft were painted in a light brown shade( which can be reproduced by mixing 1 part watercolour venetian red with 2 parts yellow ochre) with undersurfaces of neutral grey [ again from the USA?]. Lightnings transferred from Europe normally still carried their original colours. So to me that says that P-38s from the USA direct to North Africa had this pink camouflage, or light stone [for evaluation] while later deliveries [from the USA ?] had a light brown colour. Is all in the Kookaburra book been found to be correct after all these years ? and is there any photograpic proof of these colours on P38's ? especially the pink ones ? comments in brackets [ ] are mine. Thanks, Alex |
