19/05/1940 Ju87 shot down by Lysander-crew

Hi !

On 19/05/1940 the Lysander-crew, A.Geddes and Clarke, of 2 Squadron were able to shoot down a Ju87 at Kruisbos.

Who has more details about this victory ?
Where is Kruisbos located ?

Many thanks and best regards

Luc

Hi,
it was a Ju 87 of LG 1, the plane was only damaged, nobody was wounded and the pilot returned to base.
Best wishes

Luc,

The published history of No.II(AC) Sqdn "Second to None" by Hans Onderwater includes a log section on this engagement, including the transcript of the Air Combat Report filed by Geddes. It notes "The Stuka crashed into a small wood near the village of Kruisbosch east of Oudenaerde." Flying Officer Tony Doidge drove to the reported crash site and confirmed the kill by telephone. "Belgian soldiers captured the German pilot. He was handed over to us and locked up in a cage in Bethune. The gunner was killed in the battle."

So a reported crash site, confirmed by a visual inspection, a captured pilot, sounds like a 'kill' to me. The PRO should possibly still hold a copy of the relevant AIR file containing the Air Combat report given it was so comprehensively quoted verbatim in the No.II(AC) Sqnd history.

Regards,

Hi Luc

Something happened there , no doubts !! maybe the HS-126 2.(H)/41 as Montana wrote
Uffz Meermann Gerhard (RTD)-- Fw Carl Herbert (WND) but the pilot return (maybe liberated by the advance of the Germans?) and the observer was “only” wounded !!??

Unfortunately , I am still unable to locate that village !! Maybe Kruisbergen near Kwaremont 9.5KM SE of Oudenaarde ?

Regards
Phil
