I realise this doesn't answer your question but, do you have any information re: the Mosquito? (Was it a 416th NFS machine? Serial number? etc?)

Re: 414 NFS claims

Lutz's Mosquito was SZ998 SM-V. Anyone have any more info on these losses? Keep up the good work Nick I like your books and site. Do you have anything else in the works?

(1) Thank you.

(2) Various stuff is in the works for the site, some very soon but the more insanely ambitious ideas may take a little/lot longer.

Books, I don't really know. I have all kinds of raw material to work on but can't tell yet what any particular strand might add up to. Now if I didn't have to spend so much time earning a living ...

What is your source? The problem is that SZ998 SM-J was lost with S/L Hanbury & F/L Hart on 6/7 April, while on 8/9 April W/O Everson & Sgt Ruud were downed by a P-61 while flying NT187 SM-V. I assume Lutz flew a borrowed 305 Sqn aircraft, and it would have been a real irony if Jones downed an aircraft from the very same Squadron!

Re: 414 NFS claims

How did Lutz come to be flying a Mossie FB VI of RAF #305?

I have 305 based at Esinoy/Cambrai and 414 based at Strassfeld, Germany at that time.

Possibly this is the 6./KG 77 aircraft referred to in ADI(K) 440A/1944: a Ju 88A-4 shot down by a Beaufighter at 10.59 hours [sic] on 6 August, 5 miles NW of Ajaccio while on FuG 200 recce from Istres. Crew members were:

FF Uffz. Walter Pabst MIA
BO Uffz. Hermann Stoerze WIA
BF Lt. Heinz von Frank Unhurt
BS Uffz. Wilhelm Schulz WIA

Survivors in allied captivity.

Monitoring of radio traffic from German aircraft that night revealed that seven of KG 77 or KG 26 were active from 23.40-04.59; four of KG 77 from 23.45-05.09.

50 miles north east of Ajaccio, Corsica (4206N, 0745E) at 01.55 local time (time given as "midnight" by a signals intelligence unit which logged times in GMT) a reconnaissance Ju 88 was attacked by the Beaufighter of Capt. John E. Patterson and Lt. Roy E. Patten of 414th Night Fighter Squadron, USAAF, operating under the control of "FOODSHOP". The Ju 88's starboard engine exploded at low level, the aircraft hit the water and was destroyed.

Re: 414 NFS claims

I wouldn't be surprised if Walter Pabst was a distant relative of the Pabst family in America (best known for their brewing empire).

Re: 414 NFS claims

Good night to all.
I do have been in contact with Mr. Reg Everson as well and can inform that yes, they were shot down by a P-61 Black Widow while on a bombing mission. They were very soon after the baile out captured and later interrogated by SS men. As previously posted down here ( late thread ), friends from this Forum helped me to identify the US aircrew that shot him down ( the P-61 crew claimed a Ju 88 ).
Mr Reg Everson was still alive in the UK.
This thread is very interesting and I am very interested to see the other claims being matched ( claims by 414th NFS squadron ).
Friendly yours
Adriano
