Re: Photos 9-29

Hello!

This photo:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=180294904947

shows quite likely a weather reconnaissance plane/unit emblem. The sensor looks to be thermometer one. Also unit insignia includes weather map signs of cold and warm fronts and fog (?) between them. The "wing" on top is map symbol for wind. The number of "feathers" tells the wind velocity. In this case 35 m/s? (three and half feathers) - quite a lot. Correct if I am wrong - the wind velocity symbol is used even today but it is loong time since I last had to memorize such things.

Re: Photos 9-29

Hi, folks...

Any ideas on this photo, either...?

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=130259205560

Apparently the '80' code on the Dornier furthest from the camera stood for Aufklärungsgruppe (R) 18, according to Alain Fleuret's Luftwaffe Camouflage 1935-40 (Kookabura), but what did the 'R' stand for, and how should the codes be interpreted in relation to the Staffel identification...?

Thanks in adavnce for any suggestions/information...

Not sure what the R stands for but this is what the code means:

80+B14 :
8 = "Kreis" number, in this case Wien (Vienna)
0 = Geschwader in this "Kreis"
B = aircraft letter
1 = indicates the Gruppe
4 = indicates the Staffel or Staffelen (not necessairy the 4th).

Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Rudi.

Re: Photos 9-29

Hi, Rudi...

Thanks for that. As far as the 'R' is concerned, I suppose it could have the same meaning as the 'R' in Ju87R, namely Reichweite, which I believe is connected to the fact that that version carried underwing fuel tanks to extend the range. However, I would have thought the usual term of Fern (Distance) would have been more appropriate to denote long-range. I suppose it could just be a typographical error, since F and R are close to each other on a computer keyboard, perhaps on old type-writers etc, as well... all very strange.

Regards

Guys
With ref to the early Do 17,
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=130259205560
I guess the R could also stand for Reserve, that is a reserve unit.

The code 80+B14 works fine with me, but what about the aeroplane in front, 80+B3K? What kind of stafffel is referred to with the letter K or what else could be the meaning??

With the regard to the French experimental aircraft I have seen it or something like it, but can't put a finger on it unfortunately. The Farman 230 was a pixie and I don't think this one had had any military service.
Large numbers of French light civil aircraft was impressed by the Armée de l'Air and used for liasion duties, but those I have seen did combine the civil registration with some kind of roundel.

Cheers
Stig
