USAAF Teletype codes Query

Hello,

My first post and I would like, first of all, to thank Moderators for accepting me on this forum.

I was reading some 8th AF teletype messages and noticed to/from adresses were in "code" all starting with OI thereafter 3 other letters.

Codes I have come across so far are :

OIAJX OIAWW OIBDY OIBMP OIBXD OIDEB OIHAK OIKHI OIKWG OIPNT OIRDN OISAS OISFW OISTP OISXW OITHE OIWOD OIWTH OIWTM

Could anyone explain me where these codes relate to or even what they were?

Regards

Re: USAAF Teletype codes Query

I'm sure someone a lot more knowledgable than I will be able to give you a full list, but I would say that OIAJX would most likely be "AJAX", 8th Fighter Command based at Bushey Hall in Hertfordshire.

All the best,
Nige

Hello Nige,

Does makes sence, many thanks.
OIPNT could be "Pinetree" I asume?

Other thoughts I had for OIDEB = Debden? & OIBXD = Boxted?
But to be honoust that is just a wild guess..

Re: USAAF Teletype codes Query

By the examples OISTP is probably Steeple Morden,OIHAK is probably Hardwick, but makes you wonder regarding omission of Bassingbourn, Thorps Abbot, Thurleigh, etc

To be honoust, all of these abbreviations were on VIII FC document regarding 24th Dec 1944 Mission, hence most of them are VIII FC related.

On several prints, message was adressed from Pinetree to all Bomb Divsions HQ and Fighterwings and always is same order :

OIBMP OIKHI OITHE OISFW OISAS OIWTH
As last three are (in My opinion) 65FW, 66 FW & 67FW in order, it seems likely that OIMBMP = Brampton Grange 1BW HQ , but then I struggle a bit with 2BW & 3BW.
OIKHI might be Ketteringham Hall 2BW HQ.
OITHE is a mystery, if theory is right this could be 3BW HQ at Elveden Hall but abbreviation does not closely resemble to this.. Only thing I can think of is town nearby : Thetford

OISTP, do agree with Steeple Morden..
Think OIWTM could very well be Wattisham
As for OIHAK, hope you don't mind I'll put a ? with Hardwick.. Only reason for this as I believe this airfield did not had a FG based in Dec1944. Closest I can come up with is Halesworth, but problem with this is letter K not present.

Do want to thank you for the suggestions made, really appreciate it.

Regards
Joost

361st was at Little Walden.
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Little_Walden
"Little Walden Park and the adjoining farms was selected for a RAF Bomber Command airfield in the summer of 1942 and was originally called Hadstock".

Very Interesting! Many thanks.
Looking further, I asume IAH = AEAF HQ ; OIAWW = US Strategic Air Forces (HQ?)

Re: USAAF Teletype codes Query

At that time of the war each of the Fighter Wings was assigned to a specific Air Division, formerly Bomb Division. I.E 65th was assigned to 2nd AD and comprised of 4th 56th, 361st, 355th and 479th FG (as you knew). So, Debden, Boxted, Fowlmere, Steeple Morden and Wattisham respectively
