New or around the Block

These photos were from a photo album I viewed in Ottawa, taken at Wunsdorf in 1945.

Hello Richard,

Thank you for posting these most interesting photos. By doing so, you have helped me answer a couple of questions regarding the aircraft found at Wunsdorf.

Re: New or around the Block

Hello again,

Is not the correct name of the base Wunstorf and not Wunsdorf?

Re: New or around the Block

Hi Richard,

Fascinating pics indeed. Were they all taken at Wunstorf? I have a doubt for both the He 177 and the Me 262 A-1a's. The latter were JG 7 planes flown in by their pilots at Fassberg on 8 May 1945..

Thanks again
Marc

Re: New or around the Block

The group of 5 photos were all on the same page with the FW-190 photos stating they were taken at Wunstorf on May 5,1945. I presumed they were all taken there. This one was also taken there.

Re: New or around the Block

In the one FW-190 photo, 2 Spitfires with the YO code from 401 Sq RCAF are seen, they were based at Wunstorf from April 15 to May 12, 1945.

Hope this helps, Richard

The Ju 86 P-2 086 5132 T5+PM was surrendered at Fassberg, Ju 86 "R-1" 086 5161 DD+GE was surrendered at Schleswig. I have no record of any Ju 86 P/R at Wunstorf.

Re: New or around the Block

Thanks for your precisions Ed!

Richard, about the Me 262's, they were definitely photographed at Fassberg airfield:
- Me 262 A-1a W.Nr. 500 210 "Gelbe 17", Lt Hans Dorn, 3./JG 7.
- Me 262 A-1a W.Nr.110 800 "Gelbe 7", Uffz Günther Engler, 3./JG 7

Both machines were flown out of Saaz (Zatec) in Czecholovakia in the afternoon of 8 May 1945, thus preventing capture by advancing Russian troops.

For more pictures about Luftwaffe planes found in Wunstorf, check out this thread on LEMB:

And this other on my Flickr account, hosting 19 pictures of Bf 109's found at Wunstorf:

Re: New or around the Block

Hello Marc. That makes sense as 401 Sq moved to Fassberg on May 13,1945.

Re: New or around the Block

The Ju 88 and Ju 87 were at Wunsdorf: F1+EU and V8+JB respectively.
