Re: Martlet shot down by U-278-ID ?
The Martlet concerned was from HMS Activity, but it wasn't shot down.
From the ships log: '0443, launched 1x Swordfish & 1x Wildcat [Martlet] on A/S strike Attacked U-boat 67.48N, 01.45W, results unobserved' Both aircraft landed on Activity at 0620. HMS Fencer had Swordfish in the air at the same time, and one of these would be the second biplane spotted by 278. The Fencer log just states that a Swordfish reported attacking a submarine without further details. No aircraft were lost from either Activity or Fencer around that date. Hope this helps.
