According to a U.S. report A.I.2 (g). Of the wrecks found on the airfield St Jacques de Rennes in September 1944. We have a wreck of a Heinkel 177. WNr.0948. As we have known no loss in my region He 177, I suppose that the wreckage may have a link with my crash St Séglin. |

Re: Identification crash
Daniel
I am puzzled by the WNr you quote, 0948. Can't find this in Griehl's book about the type in question. Remi You are short cut in extreme , but I have located your losses in Griehl's book. One question thoughYour info and Griehl's are mixed when it comes to WNr 550210 and 550211 HE states 550210 A-5 code not known missing 5.7.44 with 4./KG 40 550211 A-5 F8+MK missing 8.8.44 with 2./KG 40 Care to comment? Re: Identification crash
From NVM I have 550211 8-6-44 Raum Cherbourg and 550213 0n 5-7-1944 which may have fallen to a 456 Sqd Crew at 0010hrs.
The only 4 engine loss I have for 5-7-44 was a Fw 200 shot down by a P-38 near Fl.Horst Cognac with 1 dead, and three wounded taken to Hospital at Saintes but that is too far south. Could 0948 be 0048 like Stig I could not find 0948 ? Hope this helps Brian Bines |

Re: Identification crash
Hello everyone!
I have a hard time believing that the French Gendarmerie in 44 would classify a He-177 as a four engines bomber...You would have to be mightily knowledgeable about aircraft and especially German aircraft to know about the peculiarities of the He-177! It would be more logical to me to look for a stray Condor attacked at sea offshore Morbihan and trying to reach Rennes (why not Vannes or St Nazaire which were a lot closer?) and too hopelessly damaged to succeed? Le Gacilly, St Séglin and Rennes are on the shortest straight line from the coast to Rennes in this order... JV |

Re: Identification crash
Hi,
But I did not say in my first message in the report of the gendarmerie, it was reported that the bomber with four engines was a He-177. A few years ago the discovery of this report, it was a question Fw 200. And then Wednesday after placing my question on the forum, I remembered that a friend had a U.S. document A.I.2 report (g) with the fact that Heinkel 177. WNr.0948 as wreckage on the airfield at Rennes. I have therefore issued summons to the track for this Heinkel 177. Dan |

Re: Identification crash
I agree...the fact that the wreckage of a He-177 (what does that mean? was it a pile of aluminum bit and pieces? a damaged A/C? a dismantled A/C?) may not bear any relation whatsoever with the "bomber with four engines" of the Gendarmerie report, for the reasons I exposed...
