help reqd in a/c ID

With the wealth of knowledge on this board maybe someone could help with the ID, and purpose, for the a/c in this thread on the LEMB board,

Re: help reqd in a/c ID

...for those here who are not members of the LEMB, below are the two images being discussed. Theories include:
  • Me210 with a dive bombing modification
  • a very early Bf 110 prototype modified as a reco plane
  • a Wochenschau bomber where the nose would be useful for a large cine-camera that can be trained in elevation to capture air and ground scenes.
Cheers,

Re: help reqd in a/c ID

Hi All

I believe we can drop the Me 210 theory. I doubt very much anyone making a modofication like this also would ensure a retrograde engine installation.

Neither do I believe it is a Bf 162. The engines are not quite the same and the same goes here, why change the engines.

Far more likely is an early 110. In this context may I remind everyone that the Bf 110V-9 was likewise modified late in its career with a strange nose configuration. The theory about a PR mod to ensure good air-to-air shots sounds quite plausible to me.

Cheers
Stig

Re: help reqd in a/c ID

Hi...

I think Stig is closest with his comments. It's certainly a Bf110 derivative, a modified 'B' variant from the looks of things. For me, this is evident in many ways... engines, undercarriage and especially forward canopy, with the characteristic 'upwards' and 'outwards' open forward canopy sections of a Bf110.

As to why it was so modified, I don't know, but a very unusual layout and an interesting photo.

Regards
