Re: Heinkel He111 Oud-Turnhout/ Belgium May 14, 1940
It is indeed likely that this concerns a He-111P during the May campaign. The closest I have is a crash on May 14 "15 km North of Hasselt", which is pretty well in the direction of Oud Turnhout, especially if the above location indicates rather more the place of encounter than the crash location.
The Heinkel was claimed jointly by Hurricanes of No. 85 and 87 sqn around 8.45 a.m. The crew of Oblt Konrad Häfele landed behind the german lines (which were by then along the line Antwerpen-Leuven-Namur) and there does not seem to have been major casualties. Furthermore, if I study the picture carefully, I read the aircraft code as 1G+BT; the lower loop of the individaul letter is clearly closed. This would even suggest that this could have been the a/c of the Staffelkapitän. Can anyone confirm? Would be nice to get the full set of crew names. Kind regards, Pieter |
