Re: Do18 shot down Walrus 24 April 1940
On 24. April 1940 the Luftwaffe had a total of five Staffeln equipped with Do 18's to its disposal. All of them were in Kü.Fl.Gr.406 subordinated to Führer der Seeluftstreitkräfte West (F.d.L. West). 2./406, 3./406 and 2./906 were located at Hörnum and 1./106 with 1./406 in Rantum. The last two Staffeln often used Hörnum as forward base for operations.
On 24.04.40 the KTB of F.d.L. West give the following details: 06.14 - 06.36 hours five Do 18's of 3./406 Hörnum took off for recce in the Skarerrak area. 06.55-08.02 ten Do 18's of 2./106 and 1./406 took off from Hörnum for recce in Seegebiet (sea area) "A". At 10.43 aircraft K6+GH of 1./406 reported being attacked by an enemy aircraft in area 4128. 20 minutes later the same aircraft reported "Carrying out intended mission". Apparently, all aircraft came safely back to base. No loss or claims of enemy aircraft indicated. |
