Re: Quick German translation question -

Steve

Platzflug comes from Flugplatz = airfield. It means a quick hop by various reasons (maintenance, engine test, other tests, pilot training or other curcumstances, even private reasons e.g.), not far away from the home airfield (=Flugplatz)and in the most cases not operationally.

Verbandsflug means flying in a formation. In the German military terminology, a Verband (more then one independet acting military organisation like two Gruppen and more of a KG e.g.) are a Verband. The best example would be a USAAF CBW. When they took off for a target and finally finished the assembly in the ordered formation, the units were on a Verbandsflug to the target.

Best regards

Re: Quick German translation question -

Hi Steve,

As I understand it:

Platzflug = Flying in the vicinity of an airfield, for example flying circuits and practising landings or checking something or somebody out

Verbandsflug = Flying in a formation

Best regards,

Marcel
