Re: Ask for advice: the German bombing of Poltava Perspective
Read page 283-292 in Karl Gundelach's book Kampfgeschwader General Wever 4. There is a quite good description of the attack seen from the German side.

Re: Ask for advice: the German bombing of Poltava Perspective
Is the number of USAAF fighters destroyed on the ground by the Poltava attack known with certainty?
Whatever the source, I have always seen the the number of B 17s destroyed reported as being in the mid-forties. However, while Craven and Cate's The Army Air Forces in World War Two states that: "....Besides, fifteen Mustangs and miscellaneous Russian aircraft were destroyed....." (http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/III/AAF-III-9.html, see page 314) IIRC I have seen widely different reports of the numbers of USAAF fighters destroyed. I note that the second post in this thread refers to the destruction of two single engine A/C. TIA |
