Re: Ask for advice: the German bombing of Poltava Perspective

Read page 283-292 in Karl Gundelach's book Kampfgeschwader General Wever 4. There is a quite good description of the attack seen from the German side.

It was a night attack, so no escort fighters.

Re: Ask for advice: the German bombing of Poltava Perspective

Is the number of USAAF fighters destroyed on the ground by the Poltava attack known with certainty?

Whatever the source, I have always seen the the number of B 17s destroyed reported as being in the mid-forties.

However, while Craven and Cate's The Army Air Forces in World War Two states that: "....Besides, fifteen Mustangs and miscellaneous Russian aircraft were destroyed....." (http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/III/AAF-III-9.html, see page 314) IIRC I have seen widely different reports of the numbers of USAAF fighters destroyed.

I note that the second post in this thread refers to the destruction of two single engine A/C.

TIA

Re: Ask for advice: the German bombing of Poltava Perspective

Thanks gentlemen for your enthusiastic participation!
When the bombers through the Brest - Litovsk 80 km south-east, the Nazis sent more than 20 Air Force fighter jets took off to intercept. 4 U.S. troops in combat Fighter Group 335 Fighter Wing of a P-51B (No. :43 -6784) was shot down by German fighters, but the German side there are six fighters were shot down.'d Like to know from the German Air Force aircraft the preparation of specific groups, led officers to be shot down six aircraft models, the driver name?
