Re: Information Concerning the Loss of Alfred Felix - 6th July 1942 over El Alamein
Rick,
This is the info from VolksGrabensuche: Alfred Felix ruht auf der Kriegsgräberstätte in El Alamein. Endgrablage: Gruft 7 Nähere Informationen zu diesem Friedhof erhalten Sie hier. Nachname: Felix Vorname: Alfred Dienstgrad: Unteroffizier Geburtsdatum: 18.10.1920 Todes-/Vermisstendatum: 06.07.1942 Ok, I found his unit. He was a member of I/NJG-2 . The crew was Lt. Georg Wiedow, Uffz. Karl Danziger and Uffz Alfred Felix. All the book notes (Ferne Nachtjagd-Mohlenbeck,pg 185) is that Lt Wiedow did not return from a mission over Egyptian soil. The aircraft was Ju 88C-6, 360191, R4+DK and reason for the loss "Absturz infolge Nachtjägerbeschuß". He was not a pilot, but "Bordschütze".

Hi,
What does "Absturz infolge Nachtjägerbeschuß" mean? If it is something like night school training I am a little confused because his sterbebild gives him awards on the Iron Cross First Class and the Bronze flying badge. He can't have been inexperienced. Any ideas? Rick |

"Absturz infolge Nachtjägerbeschuß" = crashed as a result of being hit by a nightfighter. He was a gunner, not the pilot.

Re: Information Concerning the Loss of Alfred Felix - 6th July 1942 over El Alamein
Rick
I take it you don't have MAW Vol 2? According to Shores et al Luftwaffe lost three aircraft that night (6/7.7.42) one of them being the Ju 88 C as per Matti's answer, the other two being He 111 H. The problem is that British nightfighters (Beaufighters from 46 Sq) only claimed two victories and it seems Allied Flak did not claim anything either. So unless one German loss is recorded on the wrong date the conclusion has to be that one aircraft was lost to other causes. What that cause was is anyone's guess I suppose. I./NJG 2 primary job at night during this time was to intercept 205 Groups Wellingtons making more or less nuisance raids at night against various German/Italian strongpoints while the British Beaus did the same thing against the German raiders. One long shot might be that some gunner was extremely lucky that night and managed to score, without perhaps even realising his skill, and the crew never bothered to make any report of it. But as I said this is perhaps very speculative... B Rgds Stig |
