The copy of the Ju 88 vol. 1 I examined was OK in quality, so maybe you got faulty copies?
In general, I have been told that binding quality has definitely reduced over the years and that book club editions of the 1970s tend to have better binding than standard editions of today.

Two copies were damaged and replacements were sent. Two were completely detached from the spine, including a replacement copy, and the other two have gaps between the spine and the pages.
I emailed Crecy last week and they have yet to respond. Quote:
