Many thanks, Nick, that is useful information.
There's an on-line article which describes 500 Junkers 52 and 72 gliders transporting airborne troops to Crete on 20 May 1941; although it looks well-written and authoritative, it fails to provide any references (https://ransomechua.wordpress.com/20...er-crete-1941/). Is there any way I can confirm the numbers?

The Germans certainly used paratroopers in the invasion of Poland.
