Eduardo: "The new Staffel 4/FAGr .5 was commanded by a Hauptmann Kunz acccording to Robert Forsyth."
Don't blame Robert! He wrote the other 309 pages of "Shadow over the Atlantic" but I contributed the 3 pages where Kunz is mentioned.
Chris: "you know all about 4/FAG 5 so who is Kunz?"
I write the stuff but I don't always remember it! Anyway, this is the ULTRA that I got the name from:
CX/MSS/T248/80 XL2483
((1)) From 4 UBERU ((C% F)) 5 to ((C% F)) 123, Adjutant stamped 1000/17/7:
Disbanding of Staffel and handing over of equipment will be concluded at the end of this week. Immediately afterwards transfer of heavy equipment to 6.(F)/123. Transport space can be made available by Field HQ Nantes. In order to transfer the Staffel vehicles (small lorries, medium cars, heavy motorcycles). Is it permissible to break into mobilisation stocks £Mobbestand£ of 400 litres “O” fuel?
Workshop repairs on Do 217, marking 9V+AM, not yet finished. Completion during the course of the week.
Ferrying over of Ju 188, marking 9V+EM, from Werneuchen probably on 19/7 or 20/7 according to report of pilot.
For the sake of convenience and owing to the difficult transport situation, can Hptm. Kunz report to Kommandeur after the transfer has been completed? Up till now 54 officers and men have been despatched to 6.(F)/123.
((2)) Note dated 17/7 signed Adjutant.
Ref.: Your note of 1000/17/7.
1) Transfer by rail. transport.
2) Staffelkapitän will report to the Kommandeur after handing over.
NOTES:
1) Source almost sure that ((2)) is a reply to ((1))
2) 4./FAGr. 5 first reported by source on 21/5, subordinated to Luftgau XI (T191/138).
On 4/6 it received orders from Fliegerkorps X. Its operations were to be synchronised with those of 3.(F)/123 (T207/106). Its equipment on 10/7 was 4 aircraft, 1 each of Ju 88, He 111, Ju 188, Do 217 (R242(C),13). On 14/7 it had the last two only (R246(C),17). No location has been reported but on 14/7 1 aircraft was destroyed Varades (T243/75). T247/101 of 11/7 suggested it was probably going to Bordeaux-Mérignac.
3) This makes it clear that the 4. ((FAG)) reported moving in T245/170 was indeed 4./FAGr. 5 and not 4.(F)/123, as assumed.
I don't know any more about him and the DeZeng/Stankey lists don't seem to either.
