Is there any good literature dealing with LW reconnaisance service, I am looking for something like a 'definitive' history of the recon arm, detailing operations etc.

Have a look at these books by Dave Wadman, Part 1 is out now, Part 2 is on it's way.

AFAIK especially around the end of WW2, Recce Staffeln were usually divided into Kette.
