18.08.43 RAF loss

In the Wehrpas of Wilhelm Schmitter he indicates a victory over a single engine fighter on 18 August 43 near Colchester.

Is there any RAF losses in that area on that day which might fit this description??

Kind regards

Jeremy

Re: 18.08.43 RAF loss

Hi Jeremy,

Couldn't find any relevant entries in Fighter Command Losses, Vol 2, 1942/43,
as the only operational loss recorded for 18/8/43 was Spitfire VC, AR506,
flown by F/O CB Smith (RAAF), 131 Sqn, who suffered engine trouble over
France (POW).
Perhaps it was a communications a/c or an a/c of another command. There's
also the possibility he overclaimed.

Cheers. Bruce

Re: 18.08.43 RAF loss

On 18.8.43 Ltn Karl Willius of 2./JG26 claimed a Spitfire "off Ipswich", according to Tony Wood's Luftwaffe claims. Related to the Colchester story?

Regards,

Leendert

Interesting. Although a lot happened this day in regards to offensive action by the RAF and USAAF, according to my notes, enemy activity was restricted to a few defensive patrols and recce flights. I guess there was more going then reported...

Re: 18.08.43 RAF loss

Hmmm interesting thanks guys much appreciated.

Possibly an overclaim I would agree. I should mention that in reviewing his Leistungsbuch it appears this was a night mission bridging the 17/18th of August 43. Not sure if that changes anything but perhaps the shoot down, if it did occur, was listed on the 17th.

Regards

Jeremy

Re: 18.08.43 RAF loss

Hi Jeremy,

It might be a case of misidentification. Beaufighter VI, V8593, crew of F/S
J Wilkinson and F/S P Catchpole, 604 Sqn, was damaged in combat with e/a whilst undertaking interception patrol near Scorton on night 17/18. The a/c crashed on landing and was SoC, both aircrew injured. See Fighter Command Losses, Vol 2, 1942/3.

Cheers, Bruce
