Maltby War Memorial

Hi All

I am currently engaged on the Maltby War Memorial Project and need help with the following airmen - especially aircraft flown, last mission....

1. Peter Horsfield, 172 Squadron - Died 31 January 1944 - Runnymeade Memorial
2. Kenneth Peat, 242 Squadron - Died 19 June 1943 - Ambon Island
3. Cyril Whieley, 102 Squadron - Died 30 July 1943 - Hamburg Cemetery.

Your help is much appreciated

Grave/Memorial Reference: 4A. A. 1.
Cemetery: HAMBURG CEMETERY

102 Squadron Halifax Serial Number : W7883. Squadron Code: DY-R. Operation Hamburg
29th 30th July 1943
W7883 was issued to 102 Sqdn 17th Oct 1942. Served for a period with 1658 HCU before returning to 102 Sqdn. Underwent two lengthy periods of repair after sustaining battle damage in November 1942 and again in March 1943. W7883 was one of two 102 Sqdn Halifaxes lost on this operation. (See: HR711). Airborne 22:39 29 July 1943 from Pocklington. Shot down by a night fighter (Lt Sachsenberg, 11./NJG3), crashing at Todesfelde, approximately 9 km SW of Bad Segeberg.
All were initially buried at Neumunster. Their graves are now located in the Hamburg Cemetery, Ohlsdorf.

Thanks for the information

I am amazed at the information out there - are there books/CD's that you guys have access to?

I feel frustrated that I can't find what you can - but, I guess this is the role of the Forum......
