Mystery grave inscription

In Ramsgate Cemetery there is a grave stone with this inscription:

In loving memory of
Josef JURICEK
Died Jan 3rd 1973 aged 71
One of the few In The Battle of Britain

Does anyone know anything of a BofB pilot of this name?

Re: Mystery grave inscription

He's not among the aircrew list in my copy of Francis Mason's "Battle over Britain" but then he would have been 38 in 1940, quite old to have been flying, I'd think.

Re: Mystery grave inscription

Possibly Jereczek Pilot Officer E W Polish 229-43 who was in the BoB and survived....
Between 1940 and 1973 he could have "anglicised" his name...

Since found: P/O Edmund Jereczek 5.9.40 43 Squadron & lwer 229 Squadron Died 26.8.84 in Great Britain Different date of death, which would make him younger at BoB....

Re: Mystery grave inscription

I found this through Google;

http://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/310._%C...peru%C5%A5_RAF

http://encyklopedie.brna.cz/home-mmb...osti&load=3947

"worked as a gunsmith at the 310th MS. Fighter Squadron, Sergeant"

Possibly same guy?

Don

Hi,

I confirm, from official list of Czechoslovak members of the RAF, it is Cpl Josef Juricek.

Re: Mystery grave inscription

Thanks to all for your help with this. While not wanting to diminish the role played by BofB ground crew I just wonder if it is usual for them to be classed as 'One of the Few'.

Re: Mystery grave inscription

I think he should, if he was there at the time helping to keep the pilots in the air!
